Interview with Dawn

1.Do you have any irrational fears / phobias?

“It frightens me to think I could end up at a place like Thaddeus’s establishment, left there and despised by my mother.”

2.What is your worst habit / vice?

“I am often on the lookout for someone who would take me out on a boat or onto a ship. I like to be out on the water but there isn’t much reason for me to be there.”

3.How would you treat yourself if you came down with the flu?

“I would stay in bed.”

4.What is your most cherished possession?

“The swan quill from Bustle. She was a resident swan at the inlet where my grandparents live.”

5.Are you shy or social? How do you feel about attending parties?

“I am both shy and social. I like being around people but I am careful with people I don’t know well.”

6.How do you feel about being the center of attention?

“That isn’t a situation that I’m in very often. I supposed it could happen in the future. Then I would like to prepare for that because I would like to be treated with respect.”

7.What makes you blush?

“If someone accuses me of liking a boy that I have thought about as a possible man.”

8.Have you undergone any dramatic physical transformations in your life?

“Not really. Sometimes I wear clothing that is different from the people in town. Such as leggings or native decoration on a blouse or jacket. I can transform myself into another style and that would make it look as if I was transformed.”

Swans are endangered in 1920s Alaska. Unbeknown to Dawn, her grandfather has shot an old swan out of mercy. In their coastal Alaskan town, her father buys the swan pelt, preventing her Uncle Alex, a fur trader, from selling it for export. Dawn’s father surprises her part-Aleut mother with a hat she helped to make and also with an idea to catch poachers. Dawn and her mother become involved with the suspicious effects of the swan bonnet besides its haunting effect. But after they encounter women from a ship and find out about a hunting party, they ride to the inlet. There are townspeople roving the shore too but who is the vigilante and who is the poacher?

  1. Katherine, I love what this story's about. I've not read a story in a long while that deals with environmental and wildlife issues. I know it's fiction, but still it's important! I'm glad I got introduced to your story today.
